Lesson Theme: Use Of Space.
Age Group: Lower Juniors 7 - 9 years.
Lesson Length: 45 min.
Learning Outcomes: In this lesson children will learn how to use their space effectively and efficiently. They will learn how to use this space and not bump into other children. The main focus will be on stretching and curling but while the children are being still. After students have practiced this they will then perform the skill using small apparatus. Children will be asked questions during the exercise by the teacher.
.
Equipment Needed: One hoop for each child.
Warm up: The teacher picks out one child that all the students must follow. If the child touches a wall all the children must follow him/her. Similar to the game Simon says. The child must move in different pathways to make it harder for all the children to follow. Children then all jog around the room randomly doing different things like touching the wall or the ground.
Floor Work: Explain to the children that in this lesson you will be learning to use space safely. Ask children to lift their arms out wide and turn around slowly and make sure they are not hitting anyone. If they are hitting someone they mush move to another spot. After this ask the children to walk around the room making patterns with their feet e.g zigzag's. When you shout stop they must get into a space and check by putting their arms out wide and turning around. Tell the children to run around the room in and around each other in the space that is given. Encourage the children not to just run in straight lines but to keep changing directions and making lots of direction changes. When the teacher shouts stop the children stop land be as still as a statue. Repeat this for a few times but when you tell the children to stop tell them to stop and make a shape. After this we play this game again but when the teacher shouts stops the children must stop and get into the smallest shape they can possibly make like curling into a ball. This is called the curled shape. Repeat this exercise a few times. To make this exercise more interesting and fun for the children ask a child to shout stop and shout a shape. This will make the children feel more comfortable and have more fun. Tell the children to stretch out as far as they can and tell them this is the stretched out shape.
Use Of Apparatus: Children should take a hoop and sit inside it. When the teacher shouts "go" they must get outside their hoop and run around it making different shapes. When the teacher shouts "stop" the children must jump back inside their hoop and curl up as small as they can. Repeat this and make the children run around the hoop different ways and also give the children the choice of curling up as small as they can or stretching out as small as they can. This makes the children feel like they are not being told what to do and they have a freedom of choice. Also the children must discover different ways of getting into the hoop for example different ways of jumping into it. Also children should try to get from one side of the hope to the other without touching the hoop. This makes the children discover their own way of doing this and it challenges them. Give the Children plenty of times to discover new ways. After this you should stop the class and ask random children how small they can curl up in a ball and ask another how they can stretch as far as they can. This will make the children feel more involved.
Cool Down: Ask the children to lie down and tense all the muscles in their body then relax. Have the children stretch out as far as they can then have them curl up as small as they can then relax. Have the children to put their equipment away one by one on teachers command.
