Lesson Theme: Movement Tasks
Age Group: Infants - Upper Juniors 5 - 12 years
Lesson Length: 45 min
Learning Outcomes: Children will discover different ranges of movements such as bouncing, jumping and rolling. They will then put these movement together in a sequence. Children will be able to Bounce, roll and jump in a sequence.
Equipment Needed: Large Mat
Warm Up: Ask the children to walk in and out of space switching directions all the time. When the teacher shouts "stop" they should stop still like a statue and remain still until the teacher says "go". To challenge the children you could ask them to make different shapes when they stop.
Floor Work: Children are now told to hop around the room. They are told to bounce in different ways such as one foot, two feet etc. The teacher tells the children to experiment and hop in their own way. This challenges the children and makes them discover new ways of bouncing and hopping. The teacher tells the children to bounce as high as they can and then as low as they can . Also the children are told to bounce like animals. You could tell the children to bounce like a frog or bounce like a kangaroo, this makes the lesson a lot more fun for the children. You should challenge the children to bounce in different directions such as sideways or backwards or forwards. Pick out some children to demonstrate how they bounce and get they rest of the class to follow. You should also ask the students to use their hands and feet to travel around the room in a bouncy way.
Apparatus Work: Split the children up into groups of 5-6 children and tell each group to sit around a different mat. Each student is then told to line up behind each mat and bounce across it in a different way than each other. This discovers new ways of bouncing and the children can experiment all different types of bouncing. Also the children are told to join their movements together and form different sequences. Children can join a hop with a roll or a roll with a hop etc. In pairs the children can now do these together. This is a good form of team work and helps children work well together. This is a very important skill to learn from an early age. The children around each mat are then asked to perform different types of rolls. One by one the child performs a different roll. The teacher shows them how to do a log roll and the class follows the teacher. After this the children are then told to show the teacher what they learned in today's session one by one. They teacher chooses a child to perform their own sequence and the children follow this child. The teacher then asks the class what they learned in class and did they enjoy it.
Cool Down: Ask the children to stand up and stretch as far as they can and stay in one position, after this they most do the same only this time with their eyes shut. When the class have performed this the must try balancing on the ground on their bums with their hands and legs in the air. Firstly with their eyes open and then with their eyes shut. Then ask the children to lie on the ground and tense all the muscles in their body then relax.
