Lesson Theme: Transferring Body Weight
Age Group: Upper Juniors 10 - 12 years
Lesson Length: 45 min
Lesson Outcomes: Children will learn how to balance by taking weight of different sides of their bodies. Children will understand that balance is a moment of stillness. Children will learn how to balance on the floor and with apparatus.
Equipment Needed: Mats, stools, low angled ladders, benches and planks between stools.
Warm up: Start with the children walking around the room on their hands and feet. Have them move around at different paces around the room. Then get the children jumping around and making different shapes with their bodies in the air e.g curled shape. Tell the children what you are going to go through with them, that you are going to be focusing on balance in today's lesson. Have them practicing balancing for a few minutes and balancing in different ways e.g on one foot, one arm one foot etc. Have the children balancing on their side, back, bottom, shoulders and stomach.
Floor Work: Firstly ask the children to balance in different ways. Give them a chance to experiment in different types of balance. You should suggest different ways of balancing and how to make balancing easier. Ask some of the children to demonstrate their balancing to the class and ask the class follow this child's balance. Encourage them to balance in different ways. You should challenge the children and ask them to balance with small parts of their body and then large parts of their body's. They should then put balances together by balancing on one arm and one foot. Also ask the children to balance when their body is near to the floor and when the body is stretched away from the floor. Ask them which balance was easier and which balance they preferred.
Apparatus Work: It is important to remind the children that they have to be safe whilst using apparatus. You should then split the children into groups and ask them to sit at different apparatus. You should then explain to the children to discover different ways of moving over, under, across and along the different apparatus. You should give the children a few minutes to do this then chose some children to demonstrate it to the class. You should always give good feedback to the children as they will learn from this and always pick different children for demonstrations. While the child is demonstrating his/her way of balancing the rest of the class should be describing it to the teacher by telling the teacher what body parts they are using etc. After this the groups should rotate around to the next set of apparatus. This time round the children should include fast and slow movements. It is important to walk around and interact with the children and ask them to describe what they are doing. Give them feedback as this will make the children feel more comfortable and enjoy their time in your class. You should then get the children to rotate to the next set of apparatus but this time encourage the children to change the balance around from big stretched to curled up balances. Challenge children to change from one balance to another.
Cool Down: Ask the children to slowly jog around in space. The ask them to balance on to feet and stretch out as far as they can go. Then ask the students to curl up as small as they can.
